Kidney stones affect up to 5% of the population, with a lifetime risk of passing a kidney stone of about 8-10%. 1 Increased incidence of kidney stones in the industrialised world is associated with improved standards of living and is strongly associated with race or ethnicity and region of residence.
Participants are diagnosed with the types of calcium oxalate and/or calcium phosphate kidney stones based on stone analysis and presenting total daily urinary citrate excretion of less than 320 mg or 500 mg. Other diagnostic methods for stone analysis are specified by research investigators will be included.
Kidney stone disease is a crystal concretion formed usually within the kidneys. It is an increasing urological disorder of human health, affecting about 12% of the world population. It has been associated with an increased risk of end-stage renal failure. The etiology of kidney stone is multifactorial.
Modern instruments facilitate passage of endoscopes up the ureter into the kidney pelvis and permit local stone disruption with high-powered lasers ( 3 ). Percutaneous stone removal via instruments introduced into the kidney through a small flank incision permits disruption and removal of even very large stones ( 4 ).
Kidney stones can be divided into four broad types: calcium-based, struvite, uric acid, and cystine stones (see Figure 2). Among these, calcium-based stones are by far the most common, with nearly 80% of stones composed of calcium compounds (usually calcium oxalate, and rarely calcium phosphate).
All patients suspected of harbouring a stone in the urinary tract should undergo an imaging procedure to determine whether the new stone is located within the kidney parenchyma, renal pelvis, upper or lower ureter, or bladder, and whether there is ureteral obstruction. 14 The localisation of stones is also important in choosing medications, surgery, or lithotripsy. Ultrasonography (USG) is used frequently to determine the presence of a renal stone.
